Keto/ LCHF/ fasting is not just a diet, it is a powerful metabolic state.

METHODOLOGIES

KETOGENIC

This is a powerful and popular approach that is high in healthy fats, moderate in protein, and very low in carbohydrates. It is extremely effective at managing many of the chronic health problems that are commonly seen today – from obesity to seizures; type 2 diabetes to heart disease; autoimmune disorders to eating disorders, Alzheimer’s and depression.

The Keto diet can be used as an adjuvant to standard medical treatments, but can also be used as a tool when pharmaceuticals fail. There are currently many clinical trials and studies taking place all over the world to encourage a wider adaptation of the Ketogenic lifestyle.

Dr. Chris Palmer (USA) has recently released a book, “Brain Energy” establishing a link from mental disorders to metabolic dysregulation. The social paradigm is currently shifting in favor of lifestyle, nutrition, and fitness for preventative healthcare.

CARNIVORE

This is an animal-based method that attenuates and mitigates autoimmune and metabolic diseases. It is particularly effective for gut issues such as Crohn's, Diverticulitis, Diverticulosis, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Ulcerative Colitis, GERD and Hemorrhoids.

This practice takes Keto one step further, and for some people is necessary to achieve a reset of their gut microbiome and lining. Often we also see skin issues dissipate after adapting to this lifestyle.

The Carnivore method can be used for a short time, if preferred, as an elimination diet where the client adds in foods slowly one at a time to determine their sensitivities.

Variations of this method can include some fruits, but this is generally not advised for diabetics or people with metabolic syndrome. Including organ meats in the diet can be especially beneficial, but are not absolutely necessary for every client.

LOW CARB HIGH FAT

The LCHF approach is a relatively simple adjustment to make, particularly for families. It is also suitable for individuals who are struggling with some metabolic issues, but have not yet been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. The LCHF method’s carbohydrate load is lower than the standard American diet, but less restrictive than the Keto and Carnivore methods.

This lifestyle is often effective for weight loss and improved body composition. Being able to switch from burning sugar for fuel to burning fat has proven advantageous in many sports. Many high level athletes use the LCHF method to improve performance, reduce inflammation and recovery time, and maintain metabolic flexibility.

FASTING

Intermittent fasting, alternate day fasting, extended fasting and even fat fasting have incredible capacities to activate autophagy, mitophagy and apoptosis. These techniques have been part of human history since time immemorial.

Historically, humankind has often survived seasons where there was precious little available, even ice ages when food was hard to find. Our bodies were designed to be able to withstand fasting periods, and in fact perform better when not constantly in a fed state.

Many people use fasting in combination with other dietary strategies to enhance their effects. The health benefits of various fasting methods are impressive. Once an individual gains metabolic flexibility, incorporating fasting into their lifestyle is often less of a challenge than one might expect.

ELIMINATION OF PROCESSED FOODS

Simply getting rid of toxic seed oils, sugar and grains can be a wonderful “life hack” to improve overall health and longevity. People with allergies and skin issues often find relief with these dietary changes. This method is simple, straightforward, and will provide health benefits for anyone. We really learn how to prioritize whole foods when we take this route.

This method often requires some education around what constitutes “processed” foods, and is a wonderful way to teach our children about choosing a healthy lifestyle.
